Miss Dougan joined the College in 1997.
As well as being the Head of Mathematics, she is also a Head of Year and the Team Leader of the annual Paris trip.

Mr Mc Ginn joined the College in 1977.
He is a member of the Senior Leadership team and Teacher in Charge of the College Photography Club.

Mrs Mc Gurran joined the College in 1999.
She is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and the College Examinations Officer.

Mr Sweeney joined the College in 2005.
He is Manager of the School Fantasy Football League and coaches the Year 9 Boys Soccer Team.

Subject Information

Key Stage 3:
We embrace the Revised Curriculum using a range of teaching methods. These include active learning and a variety of ICT methods.
All students sit the CCEA Key Stage 3 Exam held in Term 3 of Year 10.

Key Stage 4:
All students sit examinations in AQA GCSE Modular Maths (B) over their two year period in senior school. This is detailed below:

GCSE Specification

In preparation for Modules 1 & 3, mornings/afternoons are organised in the run up to the exam, for intensive exam revision.
In Year 12, weekly revision classes are offered in Term 3, concentrating on specified topics each week.

Sixth Form:  A-Level Mathematics is available through the Bangor Learning Partnership.

Departmental News

Bryce Kirkpatrick, Year 10, was one of 60 students in Northern Ireland accepted to a Mathematics Master Class in Queens’ University Belfast in Term 1. These Master Classes were launched for the first time in 1981 to inspire and foster the enthusiasm of young pupils for Mathematics.

A team of Year 12 students represented the college at QUB for a Mathematical Quiz Day in December 2009. It involved solving mathematical puzzles and problems, followed by a Maths Quiz

Mr Sweeney led a group of Year 11 students to a Maths careers event held in the Peter Froggat Centre at Queens University in February 2010. This involved a Forensic Scientist explaining the role of Mathematics in his field. Following this, a Question and Answer session was held with Mathematics Graduates working in various careers.



The Sentinus Maths Fun Road Show came to the college in November 2009 for Years 8 & 9 students. A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all:

Maths Summer School at QUB for students completing Year 12: Wed 28th-Friday 30th July 2010. Applications must be made by 30th June 2010. See any member of the Maths Department as soon as possible for application forms.

Dominic Chavara, Year 11, won the Schools Fantasy Football League in the college, beating Miss Dougan into second. He also achieved 15th place overall in Northern Ireland.  Well Done Dominic!
