The History Department at St. Columbanus College reflects the aims and objectives of the college, providing a caring and nurturing environment enhancing the teaching and learning of our pupils.
Aims of the History Department
- To acquire knowledge and understanding of the human past;
- To investigate historical events, people, changes and issues;
- To develop and understanding of how the past has been represented and interpreted
- To be able to use historical sources critically and in their historical context;
- To promote students understanding of the development of the contemporary world
The History Department seamlessly enhances Literacy, Numeracy and ICT through teaching and learning. It develops Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities preparing our pupils for the world of work.
History is taught at KS3 and KS4 and is available in sixth form through the BLP.

Subject Information
The History Department teaches the Revised Curriculum throughout KS3. The content in KS3 includes:
Year 8 An introduction to the skills acquired in history
The Norman Conquest
The Normans in Ireland
Year 9 Rivalry and Conflict including;
Henry VIII
The Spanish Armada
The Famine
Year 10 The Twentieth Century
The Holocaust
Key Stage 4
GCSE History allows you to investigate different 20th Century events while acquiring the skills needed for further study and the world of work. Students of History learn to:

Paper 1 Study in Depth
Section A Germany 1918-1941
Section B Changing Relations: Britain, Northern Ireland 1965-85
Paper 1 can now be taken at the end of Year 11.
Paper 2 An Outline Study
The Cold War 1945-1991 [including The Vietnam War]
Controlled Assessment The Assassination of President J.F Kennedy
Controlled Assessment will contribute to a maximum of 25% of the final mark.
Students can enter GCSE History at:
Higher Tier to achieve Grades A*-D and Foundation Tier to achieve Grades C-G
