Introduction

Applied Business is taught at GCSE and sixth year.  Pupils have the opportunity to visit local business as well as visiting speakers coming to the school to assist with the learning and teaching.

The Business Studies Department have strong links with The Northern Bank and year 13 pupils have the opportunity to work in the school branch of the bank.

Applied Business GCSE


GCSE pupils study Applied Business.  The applied aspect allows pupils to develop and apply business knowledge, understanding and skills. It provides an understanding of current events in local, national and global contexts.

Examination at GCSE

Students complete one examination for GCSE Applied Business as well as a controlled assessment.
Exam 40%: 1 hour
Controlled assessment 60%: 60 hours

GCSE Specification

Sixth Year


Pupils can study GCE Applied Business.  The AS and A2 course consists of three mandatory units each, one of which is an examined unit and the other two are portfolio based. 

 

The AS units are:
  • Creating a marketing proposal
  • Recruitment in the workplace
  • Understanding the business environment
The A2 units are:
  • Strategic decision making
  • A business plan for the entrepreneur
  • Managerial and supervisor roles

Departmental News

The Northern Bank

Pupils have the opportunity to work in the school branch of The Northern Bank.  The bank is open in school every Thursday and is available to all pupils.  The sixth formers manage the school branch, they benefit from the work experience as well as the help and guidance provided by the bank managers in relation to careers and study.


Young Enterprise

The school runs a Young Enterprise club closely tied in with key principles taught in Business Studies. This is currently being undertaken by year 13 pupils and lead by Mrs F Gethin. This years group, JewelEssence have enjoyed great success which was recognised with two awards by the Young Enterprise Awards Body.
